Sally Schoon The Ministry of Education is offering eleven speech-language therapy scholarships in a move to boost numbers across the country.
There are eleven scholarships available in total, with eight available to Mori students. Applications close 30 November.
"We've made the majority of scholarships available to Mori students because increasing the number of Mori SLTs, especially those fluent in te reo Mori, is a key priority for us," says Ministry of Education Senior Advisor Workforce Development, Greg Ariell.
There are very few Mori therapists, though Mori children and young people make up approximately 19 percent of those referred to the Ministry for speech-language therapy.
"The scholarships reflect our commitment to providing effective special education services to children and young people with communication disorders, and ensuring our services are culturally responsive."
Each scholarship is worth up to $12,000 over four years to cover study costs. An additional $3,000 payment will be made following graduation and the completion of one year's employment with the Ministry's special education group.
Last year 18 students - 15 of whom were Mori - successfully applied for the scholarships.
The Ministry of Education's Special Education group employs more than 230 speech-language therapists who work with children and young people with severe speech and language difficulties.
