Who is eligible to join?

Any Speech-Language Therapist with a New Zealand qualification in Speech-Language Therapy, or anyone from overseas who has had their qualification approved by the NZSTA Qualification Approval committee.

How many NZSTA members are there?

There are approximately 500 NZSTA members.

What advantages are there for me if I join NZSTA?

NZSTA is your National Body, and will represent you in matters of importance. For example, registration, indemnity insurance, and representation for all Speech-Language Therapists to the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education.

NZSTA tasks include implementing standards of practice, Code of Ethics, collecting data and making submissions/ recommendations, and, to act as a resource for information, advice, ideas and experience.

The Association will advise you of forthcoming courses and events, and offer reduced rates to attend the biennial NZSTA Conference.

In addition, funding and support is available to attend overseas and other conferences. Speech-Language Therapists have access to promotional material and publications, including news of job vacancies, equipment, reviews, and professional articles.

Publications include Communication Matters (quarterly) and New Zealand Journal of Speech-Language Therapy (twice yearly).

How can I have a say ?

The country has seven regional areas, each with an NZSTA Area Representative. Speech-Language Therapists within each area meet up to 4 times per year for discussion on Association and professional issues. This is a forum for you to have your say. In addition, you are encouraged to contribute to the NZSTA publications.

Membership categories

Full membership, NZ $200

Available to individuals who are graduates of the New Zealand speech-language therapy training programme or graduates of non-New Zealand programmes judged to be equivalent.

Non-earning membership, $133 NZ

Available to individuals who are eligible to be full members of NZSTA but who are not working.

Student membership, $20 NZ

The following persons are eligible to be or to become student members:

1)    persons currently enrolled in an accredited New Zealand speech and language therapy programme;
2)     persons holding an NZSTA recognized qualification and who are enrolled full-time in a course of post-graduate study;
3)     persons holding a NZSTA recognized qualification and who are enrolled part-time in a course of post-graduate study and are not receiving any remuneration.

Associate membership, $133 NZ

Available to international speech-language therapists who are members of organisations affiliated to the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP).

Available to individuals in an allied profession nominated by two members of NZSTA and approved by the Executive Board.

Life membership

Up to ten members may be elected as life members as a means of permanent recognition of outstanding service to the cause of speech-language therapy.

Application for Approval of Overseas Qualifications

All overseas graduates need their qualifications approved and signed by the President of New Zealand Speech-Language Therapists Association (NZSTA). Those with under 2 years recent experience, may be eligible for 'Provisional Approval' with a review recommended after 1 years supervised employment within New Zealand.

NZSTA requirements for approval of qualifications

 

An original of your degree transcript which specifically lists courses, hours for courses, grade achieved, and specifies that the degree in speech-language therapy has been conferred, and the date that this occurred.


Documented evidence of education in dysphagia. Individuals applying for membership of NZSTA who have not received education in dysphagia will only be eligible for Provisional Membership status.

Original letter from professional membership and/or registration board indicating you are a current member in good standing in the country in which you are practising.

Certified copy of current practicing certificate/membership card of home professional association (must be valid at the time of application).

Copy of your professional Curriculum Vitae (CV).

 

 

If you have less than 2 years professional experience, provisional membership may be granted - please include a certified copy of 300 supervised clinical hours (at least 275 of which need to be direct contact and must include paediatric and adult hours covering communication and swallowing disorders). The original of this form must be signed by your clinical supervisor(s).

Certified copy of IELTS "Academic" results showing a score of 7 or above in each of the four categories, if your speech-language therapy degree qualification was completed in a language other than English, or if English is your second language.

$550.00(NZ) Application fee. Please pay by bank draft made payable to NZSTA and submit with your application.
  • If your application is approved, this fee includes NZSTA membership for the current year.
  • If your application is not approved, a processing fee of $350.00 will be retained.
If you have an offer of a job in New Zealand, please include details (name and address of hiring agency, and contact person).
